Sing Sing Juniors is composed of the youth of the Faye family, also known as Sing Sing Rhythm. Sing Sing Juniors was started in 2004 under the direction of Moustapha Faye, Doudou Faye and Isma Aw.
The Faye family descends from Biram Gueye Faye, who in the mid-nineteenth century became the first Baj Geuwel of Dakar. The Baj Geuwel is the geuwel or griot for the Lebou community, the first inhabitants of the Cap Vert peninsula. In this role they are the major geuwels for Dakar and all of Senegal. Vieux Sing Faye, the present Baj Geuwel of Dakar, is the great-grandson of Biram Gueye Faye; the members of Sing Sing Juniors are the grandchildren of Vieux Sing Faye.
As members of the Faye family, each person in the group is also geuwel. Traditionally the geuwel is a member of the artisan caste in Senegal. However, they are unlike the other artisans who produce objects in wood, leather, silver and gold. The geuwel are producers of the word. Their role is instrumental to the life of the community because they are essential to all of the important life events – birth, naming, initiation, marriage, and death.
Along with the history and cultural traditions, geuwels are also keepers of music traditions. Today many geuwels perform in popular music bands all over Senegal and throughout the world. Sing Sing Juniors is a popular manifestation of the sabar drum tradition.
In Dakar, Sing Sing Juniors continues to play in all of the traditional settings: baptisms, weddings, healing ceremonies, wrestling matches, community celebrations and soirees Senegalese. The group also performs at festivals and some members play with local bands.
Sing Sing Juniors is also prepared to do presentations and performances outside of Senegal.
